SSH Command in Linux with examples

Installing software commands in Linux

Install, update and remove programs. The command depends on your Linux family.

#apt

Debian and Ubuntu

Syntaxsudo apt command
  • sudo apt update

    Refresh the list of available software

  • sudo apt upgrade

    Install available updates

  • sudo apt install nginx

    Install a program

  • sudo apt remove nginx

    Remove it

  • apt search "web server"

    Search

  • apt show nginx

    Describe a package

#dpkg

Install a .deb file

Syntaxsudo dpkg -i file.deb
  • sudo apt install ./file.deb

    Install a downloaded .deb and fetch what it needs

  • dpkg -l | grep nginx

    Is it installed?

#dnf / yum

Fedora, RHEL, Rocky, Alma

Syntaxsudo dnf command
  • sudo dnf check-update

    Look for updates

  • sudo dnf install httpd

    Install

  • sudo dnf upgrade

    Update everything

#rpm

Work with .rpm files

Syntaxrpm [options]
  • rpm -qa | grep nginx

    Is it installed?

  • rpm -ql nginx

    List files a package installed

#pacman

Arch Linux

Syntaxsudo pacman -S name
  • sudo pacman -Syu

    Update the whole system

  • sudo pacman -S htop

    Install

#zypper

openSUSE

Syntaxsudo zypper command
  • sudo zypper refresh

    Update the list

  • sudo zypper install htop

    Install

#snap / flatpak

Universal packages

Syntaxsudo snap install name
  • sudo snap install code --classic

    Install an app with snap

  • flatpak install flathub org.gimp.GIMP

    Install an app with flatpak
